Our Philosophy

We believe in regenerative farming through our experience in organic, biodynamic, and minimal intervention viticulture. We believe that vineyard practices should leave the soil in a healthier state than it was found for future generations, by enhancing life systems in the soil.

Our goal is a holistic approach to farming where the vineyard and agriculture is an integral part of a larger ecosystem.

As for wine production, we are firm believers in non-interventionist winemaking. But this does not mean careless or uninformed winemaking. On the contrary, to truly reflect the characteristics of the vineyard, the winery environment must be incredibly clean. Processes and procedures are critical. Good winemaking is about hyper attention to detail.

Marlize Beyers

Winemaker

Marlize was trained at Stellenbosch University and Elsenburg Agricultural College in South Africa and has been making wine around the world since 2002 (where she worked with Bruce Jack at Flagstone). Flagstone pioneered natural winemaking, producing the first unfined, unfiltered Pinot Noir with no added sulphur as far back as 1999.

Currently residing in Hamilton, Ontario, she splits her time between The Drift Estate in the Overberg Highlands – South Africa and consulting in California – USA and across Chile and Spain.

This global experience gives her insight into many different climates and viticultural challenges and she has made organically certified wines in both cool, wet climates like Ontario and hot, dry climates like Catalonia. She was named Ontario Winemaker of the Year in 2013.

I believe in authenticity in wine, wines with a sense of place and to guide these wines with little interference to the best they can become. This is achieved by paying attention to the smallest detail from vineyard to bottle.
Our team has a combined 40+ years of viticulture and winemaking experience. We have a wealth of technical and marketing knowledge that we would like to share with you and your business.

Bruce Jack

Winemaker

Bruce received his winemaking education at Roseworthy and the University of Adelaide in Australia.

He has made wine in Australia, Chile, South Africa, France, Spain, and the USA. He started Flagstone Winery in Cape Town in 1998, selling it to Constellation Brands in 2008. He worked for Constellation as Chief Winemaker, South Africa, and later Accolade Wines as Group Winemaker, responsible for style direction for all the key brands.

He lives on The Drift Estate in the Overberg Highlands of South Africa, where he makes estate wines from regeneratively-farmed vineyards.
